Easy Homemade Prune Juice Recipe
Why Prune Juice Helps with Constipation:
I recently had surgery and went under anesthesia, and after a previous negative experience with strong laxatives, I was hesitant about taking them. My nurse recommended prune juice 3x a day along with fiber, and I got to work to create a recipe. To my surprise, it worked!
This homemade prune juice is more than just a digestive remedy though—it’s a thoughtfully crafted blend of ingredients, each playing a role in promoting gut health and regularity. From fiber-packed fruits to hydrating coconut water, every element contributes to soothing digestion and alleviating constipation.
Tips for Relief & Gut Health
Here’s what you’ll need to make a homemade laxative:
- Pitted Prunes: Prunes are packed with sorbitol and fiber, which soften stools and promote regular bowel movements. They are a well-known natural remedy for constipation.
- Fresh Orange Juice: The vitamin C and citric acid in orange juice help stimulate digestion and support hydration, making it easier for the bowels to function smoothly. Plus, it makes the juice taste good!
- Lemon Juice: Lemon juice adds acidity and hydration, encouraging the digestive system to flush out waste more effectively.
- Ginger Root: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes gut motility, helping food move efficiently through the digestive tract.
- Coconut Water: This natural electrolyte-rich water helps prevent dehydration, a common cause of constipation, and keeps bowel movements soft and regular.
- Kiwi: Rich in fiber and actinidin, a digestion-aiding enzyme, kiwi is a mild natural laxative that improves stool consistency.
- Chia Seeds: These tiny seeds absorb water, turning into a gel that adds soluble fiber to the gut, bulking up stools and promoting regularity. In my opinion, they are the crucial to this recipe and one of the best things you can do to improve digestion.

Storage and Tips:
Store this prune juice in an airtight bottle or jar in the fridge for up to 3-4. Shake well before drinking since the chia seeds may settle at the bottom.
