Confused? Here are some frequently asked questions:

1. How long does this juice last?

The juice is best consumed fresh, but you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Shake or stir well before drinking, as natural separation may occur.

2. What are the benefits of homemade watermelon Gatorade?

Homemade watermelon Gatorade is a natural and healthy alternative to commercial sports drinks. It provides essential electrolytes like potassium and sodium, hydrates the body, and supports muscle recovery without the added sugars and artificial ingredients found in traditional sports drinks.

3. Why does my juice sometimes taste bitter the next day?

Bitterness can develop if the basil or lime pith is included in the juice. To avoid bitterness, use only the lime juice, and make sure to use freshly picked basil.

4. This yields a lot of juice. How can I make a smaller portion?

You can freeze leftovers so you don’t waste any juice, or you can cut the recipe in half. For half, the recipe would require half a watermelon (about 90 oz of the chopped chunks), the juice of 1 lime, 1 tsp sea salt, 1/4 jalapeño, and 5 basil leaves.

5. Is this juice safe for kids?

Yes, this juice is a healthier alternative for kids. Simply omit the jalapeño to make it kid-friendly. It’s free from artificial colors and excessive sugars, making it a great hydrating option for children.

What are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals in the body that are vital for maintaining fluids in the body. Sports drinks, like this homemade watermelon Gatorade, are designed to replenish electrolytes lost during intense physical activities. When you sweat, you lose water and electrolytes, which need to be replaced to prevent dehydration, muscle cramps, and fatigue. A well-balanced sports drink helps restore these lost nutrients and supports better hydration and recovery.

By including natural sources of electrolytes, such as watermelon for potassium and sea salt for sodium, the homemade watermelon Gatorade provides a healthier and more natural way to replenish these essential minerals without the added sugars and artificial ingredients found in commercial sports drinks.

Watermelon Gatorade

If you love red Gatorade but are looking for a healthier alternative, you need to try this simple Watermelon Gatorade electrolyte juice.

Ingredients

  • 180 oz Peeled Watermelon Chunks, About 1 large watermelon
  • 1-2 Limes, juice from
  • 10 Basil Leaves
  • ½ Jalapeño
  • 2 tsp Sea Salt

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients:

  • Peel the watermelon and halve your limes and jalapeño. If you prefer a less spicy drink, remove the jalapeño.

Juicing:

  • Add the watermelon, basil, and jalapeño to your juicer. Try to evenly space the order in which you add your ingredients to your juicer. This will yield a LOT of juice which you will have to divide between many bottles or pitchers. Evenly spacing out the ingredients is important to avoid having one batch with all of the basil, and another with all of the jalapeño.

Add in the Lime and Salt:

  • Juice all of your limes with a lemon squeezer and stir in the sea salt – you’ll need to divide this evenly amongst your juice. I found it easiest to divide my juice between a few pitchers, evenly add in the lime and salt, then keep in the pitchers or divide between individual juice bottles.

Mix Well:

  • Once juiced, stir well to combine all the flavors and divide between pitchers or individual juice bottles.

Chill and Serve:

  • Enjoy immediately, or keep stored in the refrigerator 3-5 days.
